Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru‘Bel Air’2008 Domaine Taupenot-Merme, Burgundy

Drunk The Delaunay London, September 2013

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a up and coming domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, with 13 hectares  in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.

Romain Taupenot joined the domaine full time in 1998 and adapted their pruning methods, reduced yields, adopted organic viticulture, only using their own compost, begun harvesting totally by hand and selecting rigorously in both the vineyard and sorting table. Romain Taupenot is one of the rising stars in Burgundy and is the 7th generation, along with his sister Virginie, to continue the family tradition. Oak is used judiciously to avoid dominating the wines. He likes to make wines are refined and pure, rather than powerful.

Always a treat to try another Gevrey Chambertin, one of my favourite areas of the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. This is a very subtle pinot not typical of usual Gevrey Chambertins. Strawberry and blackberry dominate, certainly elegant and subtle but lacks a bit of interest for me given its Premier Cru status. Maybe this one needs a few more years to bring out the best? Still very pleasant.
