Transporting wine

Factors impacting cost to transport wines around the world?

Ship to tranport wine

There are several factors that influence final shipping costs especially volume, moving wine by water rather than by air or road, weight of the bottle and packaging materials.

Ships use significantly less fuel per bottle. Trucking wine by road is far more expensive than shipping by water.

For example , if wine is collected from the port of Buenos Aires in Argentina, the cost is about 10p less per bottle than from Chile as Buenos Aires is on the right side of the Panama Canal. If wine is picked up directly from Mendoza, which is at least 12 hours’ drive from Buenos Aires,  the cost is about 25p a bottle more. Remote places with bad roads or mountains that require smaller trucks and more time, will cost more e.g Alpine areas of Italy, Austria and Switzerland.
